Tom King is a comic book writer and novelist, best known for his work at DC Comics including Batman, Mister Miracle and The Omega Men. He won Eisner awards for best writer for his work on Mister Miracle and Marvel's Vision. He often relies on his experience as an ex-CIA agent and experiences during the recent conflicts in the Middle East in his writing. King joined the CIA counterterrorism unit after September 11 where he stayed for seven years before to writing his first novel A Once Crowded Sky.

Ich nehme einmal die Kritik vorneweg: Wer Tom Kings Mini-Serien The Vision und vor allem die Omega Men kennt, wird an der ein oder anderen Stelle eventuell etwas zu wenig Originalität bemängeln. Einige Motive, wie etwa die verzerrte Video-Aufzeichnung einer Enthauptung, hat Tom King in den Omega Men schon einmal verarbeitet - wobei er in Mister Miracle noch einen Schritt weiter geht... Auch seine Liebe zur Darstellung von innerlich zerissenen bis gebrochenen Figuren, die schonungslose Auflösung von Schwarz-Weiß-Denken, die Kriegs- und Verhör-Szenarien sind alle aus Kings bisherigen Werken, wie auch seiner aktuellen Batman-Reihe bekannt.Und dennoch gelingt es, aus diesen Bildern und Ideen, ein neues, absolut großartiges Comic-Meisterwerk zu stricken.Mister Miracle beginnt direkt mit einem Paukenschlag und einer versuchten Suizid-Szene von Mister Miracle/Scott Free, der eigentlich dabei ist, gemeinsam mit Big Barda auf der Erde sein Leben zu leben. Doch die Vergangenheit und der Konflikt zwischen New Genesis und Apokalyps holen das Paar wieder ein. So entwickelt sich in der Folge eine grandiose Geschichte, die auf mehreren Ebenen gleichzeitig spielt. Während Miracle und Barda einerseits durch die Boom-Tubes immer wieder auf der anderen Seite des Universums als Kämpfer und Strategen in die Konflikte eingezogen werden, versuchen die beiden gleichzeitig ihr Leben auf der Erde, einschließlich Familiengründung und Karriere so normal wie möglich zu gestalten.Aus diesem Kontrast heraus lässt King seine Figuren einmal mehr so unglaublich verletzlich, menschlich und emotional werden, dass man stellenweise vergisst, es mit einem Comic zu tun zu haben. Die Zermürbung des Krieges, die Suche nach Frieden, die Normalität des Wahnsinns, damit arbeitet der Comic und bietet eine bis zum Ende fesselnde, tiefgründige und lange nachwirkende Geschichte, die sich so - gerade in der Welt der Superhelden-Titel - nur selten findet.Auch optisch liefert der Comic grandiose Bilder und Ideen. Die in Kings Geschichten bekannten neun engen Panels pro Seite sind in solcher grandioser Vielfalt gestaltet und tragen die Emotionen der Geschichte dermaßen Perfekt, dass man sich immer wieder in den Darstellungen verliert.Tom King ist - bei aller Bewunderung und allem Respekt vor den vielen anderen Autoren - meiner Meinung nach der aktuell herausragendste Comic-Autor und hat völlig zu recht 2018 unter anderem für die Arbeit an Mister Miracle seinen Eisner-Award bekommen. Wenn er so weiter macht, dann werden sicherlich noch einige folgen!
Das Meisterwerk, dass hier oft in den Raum gestellt wird hat sich mir nicht gezeigt.Ich fand diesen Comic leider nicht spannend.
